Use of Computer-Based Programs in the Classroom
Many computer programs can be utilized in the classroom, either by the teacher or by the student to enhance learning. These include word processing programs such as Microsoft Word or Wordperfect, spreadsheet programs such as Microsoft Excel, Lotus 1-2-3 or Quadro Pro, PowerPoint presentations and Desktop Publishing.
Spreadsheets are tools for organizing, representing and comparing data. One example of a spreadsheet program is Microsoft Excel. Students can use the graphing functions of this program to help them interpret data. They can learn to set up a simple spreadsheet and use it in solving problems, examining data, and investigating patterns as described in the National Science Education Standards - Standard A and Standard E.
Teachers can use Microsoft Excel in their classrooms by preparing a graphing activity for their students (see download below). This activity could instruct the students to create graphs from the data tables provided in the activity using Microsoft Xcel and then make conclusions based on the graphs they create. For help in using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, students should be directed to the following link: http://www.fgcu.edu/support/office2007/Word/index.asp.
Microsoft Powerpoint is a program that teachers can utilize in the classroom to introduce new subjects or activities. For example, when introducing a frog dissection activity to Biology students, the teacher can create his or her own powerpoint presentation to show the students how to dissect the frog.
